What is a ARW file?

ARW is the RAW format of Sony Alpha cameras, such as the A7 series, A6000 series and RX100.

How RAW to JPG works here

Every camera saves a ready-made JPEG preview inside its RAW file: it’s what you see on the camera’s screen, with the camera’s colours and picture style applied. We take that preview out and save it as a JPG, on your device. It’s quick, needs no RAW software, and looks like the photo you saw when you took it.

Most cameras store a full-size preview. A few older models store a smaller one. Either way, the size is shown before you save.

Questions

Can I do this without a website?

Sony’s free Imaging Edge Desktop app opens ARW files and exports JPEG. On a Mac, Photos and Preview open ARW too. On Windows 11, the Photos app opens them with the free Raw Image Extension.

Why is my JPG smaller than the photo?

Some older Sony cameras only store a reduced-size preview inside the ARW (often 1616 × 1080). The size is shown before you save. For full resolution from those files, use Imaging Edge Desktop.

Can I adjust exposure or white balance?

Not here. You get the camera’s own JPEG, with the settings you shot with. To edit the RAW data itself, use a RAW editor such as your camera maker’s free app, Lightroom or darktable.

Are my RAW files uploaded anywhere?

No. RAW files are big, and they never leave your device. Everything happens in your browser, even in airplane mode.
