What about animated GIFs?

A JPG is a single still picture, so you get the first frame of an animated GIF. Transparent parts become white.

Questions

Which frame of an animated GIF do I get?

The first one. That is the frame most apps show as the GIF’s preview.

Will the JPG look better than the GIF?

It will look the same. GIFs only have 256 colours, and converting can’t add detail that isn’t there, but the JPG opens everywhere.

Can I do this without a website?

Yes, one at a time. On a Mac, open the GIF in Preview and use File, then Export, then JPEG. On Windows, open it in Paint and use Save as, then JPEG.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your phone or computer does the converting, inside the browser. Load the page, turn on airplane mode and try it: it still works.
