Which phones save HEIF photos
iPhones save HEIC by default. Many Samsung Galaxy phones have a High efficiency pictures setting in the camera, and some Google Pixel, Xiaomi and other phones offer something similar. Those photos look fine on the phone, then refuse to open on a Windows PC, a smart TV or a website. Converting them to JPG fixes that.
Questions
What’s the difference between HEIF and HEIC?
HEIF is the container format. HEIC is a HEIF file whose image is compressed with HEVC, which is what iPhones use. Samsung and some other Android phones can also save high efficiency photos, ending in .heif or .heic. This page opens both.
Can I do this without a website?
You can stop your phone making HEIF photos. On a Samsung Galaxy, open the Camera, tap the settings gear, then Advanced picture options (or Picture formats), and turn off High efficiency pictures. On iPhone, go to Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. Photos you already took stay HEIF, which is where this page helps.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion happens in your browser, on your device. It even works in airplane mode once the page has loaded.
Will the JPG look worse?
At the default Best setting you won’t see a difference. The JPG file is usually larger than the HEIF, because JPG is an older and less efficient format.
