Why the JPG is bigger
AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats around, so the same picture as a JPG takes more space. That’s the price of a file that opens everywhere. Choose Balanced in the options if you want it smaller.

What is an AVIF file?
AVIF is a newer image format that websites use because the files are very small. Browsers show it fine, but many photo apps, older phones, printers and upload forms can’t open it yet. JPG works everywhere.
Can I do this without a website?
Sometimes. Recent versions of macOS can open AVIF in Preview and export it as JPEG. On Windows 11, Paint can open AVIF once the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store is installed, then Save as JPEG. This page needs nothing installed.
My browser can’t open the AVIF here. Why?
This page uses your browser to read the image. Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all read AVIF. If yours is older, update it and try again.
What happens to transparent areas?
JPG has no transparency, so transparent parts become white.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens on your device, in the browser. Try it in airplane mode.
