Background
Make
One photo is for online applications. A 6×4 print fits several copies on one photo print, cut along the lines.
A new background needs the background remover: about 6 MB the first time, then kept on your device.
How it works
- Pick your photos.A photo of you looking straight at the camera.
- We fix them on your phone.Your face is found, sized and centred, on a plain background, on your device.
- Save them back to Photos. One photo for an online form, or a 6×4 print with several copies.
Take your passport photo at home
Stand facing a window in daylight, a step or two in front of a plain wall, and have someone take your photo at eye level from about 1.5 metres (5 feet) away. Look straight at the camera with a neutral face, mouth closed, eyes open, and nothing covering your face. Then pick the photo here.
Your face is found on your phone and the photo is scaled so your head, from chin to the top of your hair, fills the share of the frame your country asks for. The background is replaced with plain white or light grey, and the photo is cut to the right size.
Sizes
- US: 2 by 2 inches (51 by 51 mm), head 1 to 1⅜ inches, white or off-white background. The single photo is 1200 by 1200 pixels, the largest the online renewal takes.
- UK: 35 by 45 mm, head 29 to 34 mm, plain cream or light grey background.
- Canada: 50 by 70 mm, head 31 to 36 mm, plain white or light background.
- Australia: 35 to 40 by 45 to 50 mm, head 32 to 36 mm, plain white or light grey background.
- EU and Schengen: 35 by 45 mm, head 32 to 36 mm, plain light background.
Rules change, and offices can be strict about them. Check the latest rules on your government’s passport website before you apply.
Online or printed
One photo is for online applications and renewals. 6×4 print places as many real-size copies as fit on one standard 6 by 4 inch photo print, with thin lines to cut along. Print it at a photo kiosk or online print shop at actual size, without “fit to page” or borders.
Questions
Will my photo be accepted?
It is sized and placed to match the rules, but acceptance also depends on the photo itself: even lighting with no shadows on your face or behind you, a neutral expression, eyes open and visible, no glasses (for US, UK and Canada), and nothing covering your face. Check the result against your government’s rules before you send it.
Can I wear glasses?
For US, UK and Canadian passports, no: take them off. Australia and most EU countries allow them only with no glare and the eyes clearly visible, but taking them off avoids problems.
Can I print it at home?
You can, on photo paper at actual size. Most people get better results printing the 6×4 sheet at a pharmacy or photo kiosk, which costs very little.
Why is the background replaced?
Most countries want a plain white or light grey background, and a wall at home is rarely plain enough. The background remover runs on your device; you can choose Keep if your wall is already plain.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Your face is found and the photo is made on your phone or computer, in the browser. The first time, it downloads the background remover (about 6 MB) and keeps it. After that, it works in airplane mode.
