How GIF compression works
Every frame of a GIF is redrawn with a smaller colour palette: 128 colours at Recommended and 64 at Most. Fewer colours means a smaller file. Simple animations, stickers and screen recordings shrink well with little visible change. If a GIF can’t get smaller, you get the original back.
To shrink a GIF further, make it smaller in pixels with Resize GIF. Halving the width cuts the file by about three quarters.
Questions
Will my GIF still animate?
Yes. Every frame and its timing are kept.
Why does my GIF look a bit grainy?
With fewer colours, smooth gradients can show bands. Try Less, or resize the GIF instead.
Can I do this without a website?
Not with built-in apps on phones or computers. This page works on both.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Compressing happens on your phone or computer, in the browser. Load the page, turn on airplane mode and try it: it still works.
