How PNG compression works
A PNG can hold millions of colours, but most screenshots, logos and graphics use far fewer. Recommended picks the best 256 colours for each image and packs it tightly with OxiPNG. Edges stay crisp and transparency is kept. Less keeps every colour and only repacks the file, so nothing changes at all.
Questions
Will my PNG keep its transparency?
Yes, at every strength.
Why didn’t my photo PNG shrink much?
PNG is built for graphics. A camera photo saved as PNG stays big because it has so many colours. Turning it into a JPG makes it far smaller: try PNG to JPG.
Is it lossless?
Less is fully lossless. Recommended and Most reduce the number of colours, which you usually can’t see in screenshots and graphics.
Can I do this without a website?
There’s no built-in PNG compressor on iPhone, Android, Windows or Mac. Desktop apps such as ImageOptim (Mac) do it; this page works anywhere without installing anything.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Compressing happens on your phone or computer, in the browser. Load the page, turn on airplane mode and try it: it still works.
