Why MozJPEG
Most cameras and apps save JPGs quickly rather than efficiently. MozJPEG takes its time and packs the same picture into far fewer bytes, which is why photo sites use it. Your JPG stays a JPG, the same width and height, and it opens everywhere.
If a photo is already tightly compressed, we hand back the original rather than a bigger or worse file.
Questions
Is JPEG the same as JPG?
Yes. It’s one format; .jpg is just the three-letter version of the name. This page saves files ending in .jpg.
Can I compress a JPG to an exact size?
Yes, with Reduce image size: pick a limit such as 200 KB or 1 MB and each photo is made to fit.
Can I do this without a website?
On a Mac, Preview’s File, then Export has a quality slider for JPEG. On Windows, Paint re-saves at a fixed quality. This page uses a better encoder and handles batches.
Does it keep the date the photo was taken?
Yes. Photos come out the right way up, with their date taken, so they sort into the right place in your camera roll.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Compressing happens on your phone or computer, in the browser. Load the page, turn on airplane mode and try it: it still works.
