What a transparent background is for
A transparent PNG has the subject and nothing else, so it sits cleanly on a slide, a poster, a sticker, a website or a design in Canva. Pick a photo and the background is taken out on your phone: you get the person, pet or product as a PNG.
Only PNG (and WebP) keep transparency. JPG can’t, which is why a cut-out saved as JPG turns white or black behind the subject.
Logos and signatures
A logo or signature photographed on white paper works too: the paper goes, the ink stays. For the cleanest result, take the photo in good light, straight on, with the paper filling the frame.
Questions
Why does the background look like a checkerboard?
That pattern is how apps show transparency. It isn’t in the file: put the PNG on any colour and that colour shows through.
Why did my cut-out turn white when I shared it?
Some apps turn PNGs into JPGs when you share them, and JPG has no transparency. Send it as a file, or save it to Files on an iPhone, to keep it transparent.
Can I put a colour behind it instead?
Yes. Choose White or Colour above and the subject is placed on it, saved as a JPG.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The background is removed on your phone or computer, in the browser. The first time, your device downloads the background remover (about 6 MB) and keeps it. After that, load the page, turn on airplane mode and try it: it still works.
